Slovenia becomes first EU country to introduce fuel rationing

Ljubljana: Slovenia has become the first country in the European Union to introduce fuel rationing, responding to supply pressures and rising energy costs linked to the U.S.–Israel conflict with Iran.

Under the new rules, private motorists are restricted to purchasing a maximum of 50 litres of fuel per day, while businesses and farmers can buy up to 200 litres.

The decision comes amid a surge in so-called fuel tourism, with drivers from neighbouring countries, particularly Austria, crossing into Slovenia to benefit from its comparatively lower, regulated fuel prices.

Prime Minister Robert Golob sought to reassure the public, stating that fuel supplies remain stable, warehouses are fully stocked, and there is no risk of shortages.

Public reaction has been mixed. Some Slovenians have voiced frustration over the influx of foreign drivers, while others see it as an economic opportunity, bringing additional business and activity to local areas.
