COLOMBO: President Anura Kumara Dissanayake told Parliament on Friday that Sri Lanka refused permission for two US warplanes to land at the Mattala International Airport earlier this month. The President emphasized the nation’s commitment to neutrality despite increasing international pressure.

According to President Dissanayake, the US requested access for two aircraft from its base in Djibouti on March 4 and March 8. He confirmed that both requests were rejected.

“We want to maintain our neutrality despite many pressures. We won’t give in,” the President said. He noted that the aircraft were armed with eight anti-ship missiles. “The Middle East war poses challenges but we will do everything possible to remain neutral.”

Despite rejecting military requests, Sri Lanka provided life-saving assistance. The navy and air force rescued 32 sailors from the sunken IRIS Dena and recovered the remains of 84 crew members. Sri Lanka also allowed the IRIS Bushehr to enter its waters to shelter 219 crew members currently at a naval facility.

The disclosure follows a meeting between President Dissanayake and US Special Envoy Sergio Gor. While the US is Sri Lanka's main export market, Iran remains a key buyer of the nation's tea. The president reaffirmed that Sri Lanka will continue to prioritize humanitarian principles while balancing ties with both nations.
