Trump’s Pearl Harbour Remark Creates Awkward Moment with Japan PM

Washington: An awkward moment unfolded at the Oval Office as US President Donald Trump referenced Attack on Pearl Harbour during his first meeting with Japan’s Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi following her recent electoral victory.

The remark came when a Japanese reporter asked why the United States had not informed allies, including Japan, ahead of its strikes on Iran on February 28. Trump responded that secrecy was necessary to maintain the element of surprise.

“Who knows better about surprise than Japan. Why didn’t you tell me about Pearl Harbour?” he said, referring to the 1941 attack on the US Pacific Fleet that killed more than 2,400 people and led to America’s entry into World War II.

Observers noted that Takaichi appeared visibly uncomfortable during the exchange, leaning back in her seat with a tense expression.

Trump defended the decision not to notify allies in advance, stating that the element of surprise had been effective in the Iran operation, claiming it had significantly weakened targeted capabilities within the first two days.

During the meeting, Trump also praised Japan for supporting efforts to ensure safe navigation through the Strait of Hormuz, amid rising tensions in the region. However, Japanese officials have indicated that no decision has been made to deploy naval vessels, citing constitutional constraints on military operations.

The meeting comes against the backdrop of growing international divisions over involvement in the conflict, with several European leaders reiterating that they do not intend to participate militarily.

The exchange highlights the delicate nature of diplomatic engagement as geopolitical tensions continue to rise.
