Thousands of Seafarers Stranded in Gulf Face Fuel and Water Shortages

Thousands of seafarers remain stranded aboard vessels in the Gulf region as the ongoing conflict in the Middle East continues to disrupt maritime traffic, a leading global shipping body has warned.

According to the International Chamber of Shipping, around 20,000 crew members on approximately 3,000 vessels are currently unable to move within the Persian Gulf due to security concerns.

John Stawpert, Marine Director of the London-based organization, said the situation is becoming increasingly critical, with reports of dwindling fuel supplies and growing concerns over access to potable water onboard ships.

He noted that basic necessities such as food and water are the most urgent priorities, while the inability to transport goods by sea is making it extremely difficult to replenish supplies, including fuel.

Stawpert stressed the need for coordinated international action, urging both flag states and regional governments to work together to ensure safe resupply routes for stranded vessels.

The warning comes ahead of an emergency meeting of the International Maritime Organization in London, where global maritime leaders are expected to discuss solutions to restore safe shipping operations in the region.
