Zürich: FIFA has rejected Iran’s request to relocate its 2026 World Cup matches from the United States to Mexico, confirming that fixtures will proceed as per the official schedule.
In a statement, FIFA said it remains in regular contact with all participating teams, including Iran, and is committed to hosting matches according to the schedule announced on December 6, 2025.
Iran had sought the change citing security concerns linked to the ongoing conflict involving the United States and Israel. The situation has raised uncertainty over Iran’s participation since the conflict escalated in late February.
U.S. President Donald Trump said Iran would be allowed to compete in the United States but questioned whether it would be safe for the team. “I really don’t believe it is appropriate that they be there, for their own life and safety,” he said.
Iran’s football authorities pushed back strongly. Football federation chief Mehdi Taj said Tehran would not send its team to the U.S. if security could not be guaranteed, adding that discussions had been held with FIFA to move matches to Mexico.
Iran’s ambassador to Mexico, Abolfazl Pasandideh, also criticised Washington over visa issues and logistical support for the Iranian delegation.
The 2026 tournament, hosted jointly by the United States, Mexico and Canada, will be the first World Cup staged across three countries.
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said her country remains open to hosting matches but would follow FIFA’s final decisions.
Iran, which qualified early for the tournament after topping its group, is currently scheduled to play matches in Los Angeles and Seattle against teams including New Zealand, Belgium and Egypt.
