IndiGo Introduces Fuel Surcharge Amid Middle East Tensions
IndiGo, India’s largest airline, has announced the introduction of a fuel surcharge on both domestic and international flights, effective from 12:01am on March 14, 2026, citing a sharp increase in aviation turbine fuel prices linked to ongoing geopolitical tensions in the Middle East.
In a statement, the airline said data from the International Air Transport Association (IATA) Jet Fuel Monitor shows that regional jet fuel prices have surged by more than 85 percent amid the current crisis.
The airline noted that aviation turbine fuel (ATF) accounts for a significant portion of airline operating costs, and the sudden spike has placed additional pressure on its cost structure and network operations.
While a full recovery of the increased costs would require substantial fare adjustments, IndiGo said it has opted to introduce a moderate fuel charge to reduce the impact on passengers.
The surcharge will apply per sector for all new bookings made on or after March 14 and will be displayed separately on tickets to ensure transparency.
Fuel Charge Structure
-
Domestic India and Indian Subcontinent: ₹425
-
Middle East: ₹900
-
South East Asia and China: ₹1,800
-
Africa: ₹1,800
-
Europe: ₹2,300
IndiGo expressed regret for any inconvenience caused to customers, stating that the measure is necessary due to the sudden change in the operating environment. The airline added that it will continue to monitor the situation and adjust the surcharge if conditions change.
Reaffirming its commitment to affordable and reliable travel, IndiGo highlighted its position as one of the world’s fastest-growing airlines. The carrier currently operates around 2,200 daily flights, connecting more than 95 domestic and over 40 international destinations with a fleet of over 400 aircraft.
In 2025, IndiGo served 124 million passengers and received several industry recognitions, including “Best Airline in India and South Asia” at the World Airline Awards 2025, while aviation analytics firm Cirium ranked it as the sixth most punctual airline globally.
Passengers can obtain further information or make bookings through the airline’s official website or mobile application.
