The United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution urging an immediate, full and unconditional ceasefire in the war between Ukraine and Russia. The vote took place on Tuesday during the Assembly’s 11th Emergency Special Session, coinciding with the fourth anniversary of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
The resolution was approved with 107 member states voting in favour, while 12 opposed and 51 abstained from the 193-member body. Among the abstainers were key nations including India, China, United States, Brazil and South Africa. Russia voted against the text.
While the UN resolution is not legally binding, it reiterates a strong commitment to a comprehensive, just and lasting peace. It also reaffirmed support for Ukraine’s sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity within its internationally recognised borders including territorial waters. The text reiterated calls for the exchange of prisoners of war and the return of unlawfully detained civilians as confidence-building measures.
At related UN events marking four years of conflict, António Guterres described the war as a “stain on our collective conscience” that continues to inflict severe civilian suffering and damage critical infrastructure. He renewed calls for an immediate ceasefire and urged greater humanitarian support.
