Chicago: Gwyneth Paltrow has revealed she underwent an expensive blood-filtering “detox” treatment in an effort to remove alleged toxins from her body.

The 53-year-old Oscar-winning actress and founder of wellness brand Goop said she tried therapeutic plasma exchange at a clinic in Chicago, where a course of sessions can cost up to £36,500.

Plasma exchange involves removing blood from the body, separating and discarding the plasma — the liquid component that carries antibodies and other substances — and returning the remaining blood with replacement fluids.

While the National Health Service uses plasma exchange to treat certain autoimmune and neurological conditions, its use as a general wellness “detox” remains controversial among medical professionals.

Speaking to the Daily Mail, Paltrow said she underwent five sessions of the treatment to address ongoing health concerns, including chronic fatigue and brain fog.

“I’d been going through lots of health stuff with that kind of ambiguous chronic stuff that medicine normally has a harder time dealing with,” she said. “I was so interested in this idea that we could filter out things in our blood that were making us more sick.”

“I felt amazing after,” she added. “I felt this immediate unburdening and clarity and lightness.”

Paltrow has long been one of the most prominent figures in the global wellness industry, with Goop building a lucrative brand around alternative health trends — many of which have drawn criticism from doctors and scientists.

She has previously spoken about trying bee-sting therapy, coffee enemas, rectal ozone therapy and an eight-day goat’s milk cleanse aimed at removing parasites.

In 2017, Canadian gynaecologist Jen Gunter criticised her promotion of cleanses, describing such messaging as “stupid” and “dangerous” in a blog post.

Paltrow has also suggested her body requires additional detox support due to “genetic mutations,” a claim that has been questioned by medical experts.
