Death Toll Rises to 20 After Cyclone Gezani Hits Madagascar
Dozens have been injured and at least 20 people killed after Cyclone Gezani struck Madagascar, causing widespread destruction, the country’s disaster authority confirmed on Wednesday.
The powerful cyclone made landfall on Tuesday in Toamasina, Madagascar’s second-largest city, with winds reaching 250 kilometres (155 miles) per hour. The storm toppled houses, triggered severe flooding, and displaced dozens of residents.
The National Office for Risk and Disaster Management (BNRGC) initially reported nine deaths in the hardest-hit areas, with 19 people injured. The office later updated the toll to 20 fatalities, adding that 15 people remain missing.
Authorities continue rescue operations and have warned residents to stay alert as recovery efforts are underway.
