Iran Says It Will Not Yield to “Excessive Demands”

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian stated Wednesday that Iran would “not yield to excessive demands” regarding its nuclear programme, as the country resumes talks with the United States.

Speaking at Azadi Square in Tehran on the 47th anniversary of Iran’s Islamic Revolution, Pezeshkian emphasized that Iran is prepared for “any verification” of its nuclear activities and insisted that it is not seeking to develop an atomic weapon.

“Iran will not yield in the face of aggression, but we are continuing dialogue with all our strength with neighbouring countries to establish peace and tranquillity in the region,” he said.

Negotiations between Iran and the U.S. resumed last week, marking the first talks since last June’s conflict with Israel, during which the U.S. conducted strikes on Iranian nuclear sites. Iran insists the discussions focus solely on its nuclear programme, while the United States seeks to include Iran’s ballistic missile development and regional support for militant groups.

Supporters of Iran’s leadership gathered in large numbers at Azadi Square, waving the national flag and carrying portraits of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. AFP reporters noted a heavier security presence than in previous years.

The remarks come in the wake of nationwide protests last month, which prompted a government crackdown and drew threats of potential U.S. military intervention.
