British Columbia : Canadian authorities confirmed that at least 10 people have died following a mass shooting in the remote town of Tumbler Ridge in northeastern British Columbia on Tuesday afternoon. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) reported that multiple victims were discovered both inside Tumbler Ridge Secondary School and at a residence believed to be connected to the incident. Among those who died was the individual believed to be responsible, who was found inside the school with what appeared to be a self-inflicted injury.

Police say the first call came in just after 1:20 p.m. local time when officers were alerted to an active shooter at the combined junior and senior high school, which serves about 175 students. Responding officers found several deceased victims at the school and later located additional bodies at a nearby home. Authorities confirmed that approximately 25 others were injured, with some suffering life-threatening wounds requiring airlift to hospital, while others were treated locally.

Local law enforcement issued an emergency alert ordering residents in Tumbler Ridge and surrounding areas to remain indoors and shelter in place as the response unfolded. That order was lifted later in the evening after police reported they did not believe there were any additional suspects or ongoing danger to the public.

Prime Minister Mark Carney expressed deep sorrow over the violence, saying he was “devastated” by the shooting and standing with all Canadians affected by the tragedy. In a social media statement, Carney also thanked first responders for their efforts and acknowledged the profound impact the attack will have on families, classmates and the wider community.

The motive behind the attack remains unclear, and investigators have not released details about the weapon used or the identity of the suspect, other than a police description during the active alert of a “female in a dress with brown hair.” Authorities have emphasized that the investigation is ongoing and urged the public to avoid speculation as they continue to piece together the events that led to this rare and deadly act of violence in Canada.

Small and tightly knit, the Tumbler Ridge community with a population of roughly 2,400 people is now grappling with the aftermath of what has been described as one of the most serious mass casualty events in the country in recent years. Schools in the area have been closed for the rest of the week, and support services are being mobilized for affected families.
