Dubai Schools Ban E-Scooters and Motorised Transport Over Safety Risks

Dubai: Several schools in Dubai have introduced strict bans on electric scooters, e-bikes and other motorised personal transport devices, citing growing safety concerns and a rise in accidents involving students and other road users.
A number of institutions have warned that banned vehicles may be confiscated and that repeated violations could be reported to authorities, as schools move to tighten campus safety rules.
In a circular issued to parents on Friday, Dubai International Academy (DIA), Emirates Hills, said that from February 9, students will not be allowed to arrive at school using any motorised transport device. The ban covers all areas of the campus, including entrances and nearby access points during arrival and departure times.
The school clarified that non-motorised transport, such as regular bicycles and standard scooters, will continue to be permitted. Students using these are strongly encouraged to wear helmets and avoid headphones or AirPods while riding.
Under UAE regulations, electric scooters may only be used by individuals aged 16 and above who hold a valid driving licence or a dedicated e-scooter permit issued by Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA). Riders are required to wear approved helmets and reflective jackets, and e-scooters are only permitted in designated cycling lanes and pedestrian areas.
The maximum allowed speed is 20 km/h, while riding on main roads, highways or non-designated areas is prohibited. Violations can lead to fines ranging from Dh200 to Dh500, as well as confiscation of the vehicle.
