Over 200 Dead in Congo Mine Collapse
More than 200 people were killed when part of the Rubaya coltan mine in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo collapsed, officials said. The mine, which produces about 15% of the world’s coltan used in electronics, is controlled by the M23 rebel group and relies on local workers digging by hand for low wages. Heavy rains caused the landslide and several others were injured and taken to nearby hospitals. Authorities have temporarily halted mining and ordered residents near the site to relocate.
