Syria’s Latakia Makeup Ban for Government Employees Sparks Backlash Over Women’s Rights

Latakia: A decision by authorities in Syria’s Latakia province to ban female public sector employees from wearing makeup during official working hours has triggered widespread anger and debate, with critics accusing officials of restricting personal freedoms and targeting women.
The directive, which circulated this week, prompted backlash across social media, with activists and rights advocates describing it as an infringement on women’s rights and an example of state overreach.
In response to the criticism, Latakia’s media directorate issued a statement clarifying that the move was not intended to limit freedoms, but rather to “regulate professional appearance and avoid excess,” in order to maintain the formal image of public institutions. The clarification, however, failed to ease tensions and instead fuelled further criticism.
Human rights activists said the decision reflected an authoritarian approach to governance, arguing that authorities were focusing on women’s appearance instead of addressing corruption, economic hardship, and deteriorating public services.
Syria’s current leadership came to power after rebel forces led by President Ahmed Al-Sharaa ousted longtime ruler Bashar al-Assad in December 2024. While the new government has pledged moderation and inclusivity, several recent measures have drawn public criticism.
Last summer, provincial authorities in Latakia issued guidance urging visitors to wear “modest” clothing at beaches and swimming pools, a move widely perceived as targeting women. Officials later said the instructions did not mandate specific attire and were consistent with regional norms.
In a separate move, local authorities in the town of Al-Tal near Damascus reportedly banned men from working in women’s clothing stores.
One female government employee said the makeup ban left her feeling humiliated, arguing that appearance has no bearing on professional competence and that authorities should instead focus on improving workplace conditions and public services.
