Baghdad: Iraq has suspended operations at all its oil terminals after two foreign tankers were struck by explosions near the port of Umm Qasr in Basra, killing one crew member and injuring others.

Farhan al-Fartousi, director general of the General Company for Ports of Iraq, said the attack occurred while a vessel was conducting a ship-to-ship oil transfer in Iraqi waters. Authorities rescued 38 crew members from the damaged ships and launched an investigation into the cause of the blasts.

Officials said it remains unclear whether the tankers were hit by a missile, drone or explosive-laden boats, though preliminary reports suggest the involvement of armed vessels. Authorities say all terminal operations have been halted as a precaution

The incident comes as tensions across the Gulf intensify, with Iran accused of targeting regional energy infrastructure and shipping lanes amid the escalating conflict in the Middle East.
