Kyiv: At least five civilians were killed and several others wounded after a Russian drone struck a Ukrainian passenger train in the Kharkiv region on January 27, 2026, Ukrainian authorities said. The attack occurred near the village of Yazykove on a service running from Chop to Barvinkove, with more than 200 passengers aboard at the time.

Regional prosecutors reported that three drones, believed to be of the Shahed/Geran type, were involved in the assault. One of the unmanned aerial vehicles hit a railcar directly, triggering a fire, while the others struck nearby areas beside the train. Emergency services extinguished the blaze and evacuated passengers to safety.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy condemned the strike as an act of terrorism, stressing that there was no military justification for targeting a civilian train. Zelenskyy noted the attack undermines ongoing efforts to end the war and called on the international community to increase pressure on Moscow to prevent further attacks on civilians.

Officials said railway staff and rescue teams worked swiftly to evacuate the train. Injured passengers were transported to hospitals for treatment, and reserve buses were brought in to carry evacuees and others affected by the delay. Ukrainian Railways reaffirmed its commitment to continue services despite the increasing dangers posed by the conflict.

The strike on the passenger train is the latest in a series of Russian attacks on civilian infrastructure, including energy facilities, residential areas, and transport networks. These strikes have drawn widespread international condemnation and have further complicated diplomatic efforts aimed at securing peace.
