Amazon Accidentally Sends Staff Notice Confirming Layoffs

email: online@newsofbahrain.com

Amazon on Tuesday mistakenly sent an internal notice to cloud computing staff acknowledging ‘organisational changes,’ fuelling expectations of imminent layoffs across the company’s corporate workforce.

According to a source familiar with the matter, the e-commerce giant is expected to announce widespread job cuts as early as this week, with Amazon Web Services (AWS) and its retail stores division among the units likely to be affected.

The message referenced a post by Amazon’s Chief Human Resources Officer Beth Galetti and noted that ‘impacted colleagues’ had been notified. The email, titled ‘Project Dawn,’ was later marked as cancelled, suggesting it may have been sent in error. Amazon has not clarified what Project Dawn refers to and did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

The anticipated layoffs follow Amazon’s October announcement that it would cut 14,000 corporate jobs, with further reductions planned into 2026 as the company seeks to remove management layers and reduce bureaucracy. CEO Andy Jassy has previously said efficiency gains from artificial intelligence would likely shrink the company’s corporate workforce over time.

Earlier on Tuesday, Amazon also announced a reorganisation of its grocery business, confirming plans to close Amazon Fresh supermarkets and Go convenience stores while focusing investments on Whole Foods and online grocery delivery.

Amazon is scheduled to report its fourth-quarter earnings on February 5.
