Washington, D.C.: The Voice of Hind Rajab, a film inspired by the final moments of a five-year-old Palestinian girl killed in Gaza, has been nominated for an Academy Award in the Best International Feature Film category, Anadolu Agency reported.

Directed by Tunisian filmmaker Kaouther Ben Hania, the film is based on the true story of Hind Rajab, who was trapped inside her family’s car after it came under Israeli army fire in Gaza City on January 29, 2024. Her body was discovered nearly two weeks later following days of uncertainty over her fate.

According to the Palestine Red Crescent Society, Hind had been travelling with members of her family, including her 15-year-old cousin Layan Hamadeh, as they fled fighting in northern Gaza when the vehicle came under fire.

The film centres on an actual audio recording of Hind’s final phone call to the Palestinian Red Crescent, during which she pleaded for help. The recording, which later circulated widely on social media, sparked international outrage and renewed calls for accountability.

Two paramedics who attempted to reach the child were also killed after their ambulance was struck during the rescue effort.

The Israeli army denied responsibility for the deaths. However, an investigation by London-based research group Forensic Architecture later concluded that hundreds of bullets hit the car and that an Israeli tank had been positioned at close range.

The film premiered in September 2025 at the Venice International Film Festival, where it drew significant international attention.
