Massive Layoffs: 14,000 Amazon Jobs Expected to Vanish Within Days

Amazon is reportedly preparing to lay off approximately 14,000 employees by next week, marking the initial phase of a broader plan to eliminate nearly 30,000 corporate roles. While these cuts represent only a small fraction of the company’s total global workforce of 1.58 million, they signify a major restructuring of its white-collar operations, impacting roughly 10 per cent of its corporate staff. The reductions are expected to hit technology, human resources, and business support functions, as leadership seeks to streamline decision-making and remove the management layers that accumulated during the pandemic's aggressive hiring surge.

Crucially, the company’s frontline operations, including fulfilment centres and logistics, are expected to remain largely unaffected, as Amazon prioritises the stability of its core delivery network over office-based headcount. This shift from expansion to consolidation is heavily influenced by the rising role of automation and artificial intelligence, which Amazon acknowledges is transforming administrative and managerial tasks. By leveraging these technologies to increase productivity, the company aims to improve operational agility and tighten cost controls at a time when investors are demanding higher profit margins.

However, the scale of these layoffs raises concerns regarding corporate morale and the company's ability to maintain its long-term competitive edge in high-stakes sectors like cloud computing and digital media. As the tech industry continues to recalibrate in a post-growth era, Amazon’s move underscores a wider trend of ‘right-sizing’ workforces through technology-driven efficiency, leaving many office-based professionals facing a period of heightened career uncertainty.
