Medical Issue Forces Early Return of International Space Station Crew

Washington: NASA has decided to bring its Crew-11 team back to Earth ahead of schedule after an astronaut aboard the International Space Station (ISS) experienced a medical issue that could not be fully addressed in orbit. The decision, announced by the space agency this week, marks a rare medical evacuation in the ISS’s more than 25-year history. Officials have not released details about the astronaut’s condition or identity, citing medical privacy, but said the individual is stable. The move also led to the postponement of a scheduled spacewalk planned for early January.
The four-member Crew-11 includes NASA astronauts Zena Cardman and Mike Fincke, Japanese astronaut Kimiya Yui, and Russian cosmonaut Oleg Platonov. They launched in August 2025 aboard SpaceX’s Crew Dragon and were originally scheduled to remain aboard the ISS until around May 2026. NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman said the decision to bring the crew home prioritizes astronaut health because the ISS does not have the full range of diagnostic and treatment tools available on Earth.
Officials stressed that the early return is precautionary rather than an emergency evacuation and that such incidents are rare but planned for in long-duration spaceflight. The agency said Crew-11 will splash down safely in the coming days, and international partners are monitoring the situation closely. NASA is evaluating whether the next rotation, Crew-12, might launch earlier than its currently planned mid-February 2026 date to maintain station operations.
