Thousands Evacuated as Philippines’ Mayon Volcano Reaches Alert Level 3

The Philippine government has evacuated nearly 3,000 residents from the foothills of Mount Mayon after raising the alert to Level 3 due to 'quiet' eruptions, lava dome swelling, and hazardous rockfalls. While the 2,462-meter volcano is a major tourist attraction for its near-perfect cone, it remains the nation's most active, with 54 recorded eruptions since 1616. Despite a permanent 6-kilometer danger zone, thousands of impoverished villagers continue to live and farm on its slopes, highlighting the extreme environmental risks faced by those living along the Pacific 'Ring of Fire'. Although current activity includes pyroclastic flows, experts are monitoring for further signs, such as increased earthquakes or gas emissions, to determine if a more violent, major explosion is imminent.
