Malaysia has officially launched the Aroya Islamic Cruise, Southeast Asia’s first luxury Umrah voyage, marking a significant shift in regional religious tourism. The 16-day journey departs from Port Klang and follows historical maritime routes, stopping in Banda Aceh, the Maldives, and Oman before docking in Jeddah. Operated under Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund, the vessel is designed as a "floating mosque," featuring 27 halal restaurants, dedicated spiritual areas, and onboard broadcast studios for sermons. The initiative aims to revive the traditional sea pilgrimage while providing a premium alternative to the logistical challenges and quotas associated with air travel.

From an economic perspective, the project is a strategic move to bolster Malaysia’s position in the global halal tourism and blue economy sectors. With an estimated annual capacity of 6,000 passengers, the majority of whom are expected to be international tourists, the cruise is supported by a network of official Umrah agencies to ensure seamless coordination. Beyond mere transport, the Aroya model serves as a proof of concept for maritime nations to utilize their coastlines for large-scale religious logistics, potentially offering a sustainable solution for the rising demand in pilgrimage travel across the world.
