EU Urges Restraint After US Claims Capture of Venezuela’s Leader
The European Union on Saturday called for calm and respect for international law following an announcement by Donald Trump that US forces had captured Venezuela’s leader Nicolas Maduro during a large-scale military operation.
The EU’s foreign policy chief, Kaja Kallas, said the bloc has long maintained that Mr Maduro lacks legitimacy and supports a peaceful transition in Venezuela. She made the remarks after speaking with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
“Under all circumstances, the principles of international law and the United Nations Charter must be respected,” Kallas said, adding that the EU is calling for restraint.
