Brasilia: At least 11 people were killed and several others injured after a bus and a truck carrying sand collided head-on on a federal highway in southern Brazil, authorities said.

The crash occurred around 11:30 a.m. local time on Friday in Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil’s southernmost state, according to the Federal Highway Police. Rescue teams were dispatched to the scene, and at least seven injured passengers were taken to nearby hospitals for treatment.

Emergency responders said the rescue operation was hampered after part of the truck’s sand cargo spilled into the bus following the impact, making it difficult to access victims trapped inside the vehicle.

The cause of the collision has not yet been determined, and an investigation is underway to establish the circumstances leading up to the crash.

Brazil has one of the highest rates of road fatalities in the region. According to the country’s transport ministry, more than 10,000 people died in traffic accidents nationwide in 2024.
