Abu Dhabi Fund for Development Supports Major Water Project in Mauritania

The Abu Dhabi Fund for Development (ADFD) has helped finance a major project to improve water security in Mauritania by supplying clean drinking water to the city of Kiffa and nearby areas.

The project is one of the largest water initiatives in the country and aims to meet the growing demand for water in the Assaba and Guidimaka regions. It was officially inaugurated in Touimirt Iflane, south of Kiffa, in the presence of Mauritanian President Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani.

The project will bring water from the Senegal River to dozens of cities and villages, providing safe drinking water to communities that face water shortages.

Valued at more than $300 million, the project is expected to benefit over 180,000 people in its first phase. In the long term, the number of beneficiaries is set to increase to around 500,000 people by 2050.

It includes the construction of water production and treatment facilities with a daily capacity of up to 50,000 cubic meters. The project also features a water transmission and distribution network stretching more than 780 kilometers, designed to support future expansion.

Mohammed Saif Al Suwaidi, Director General of the Abu Dhabi Fund for Development, said the project is a key investment in tackling water scarcity, one of the region’s most pressing challenges. He noted that the initiative will help improve living standards, strengthen long-term resilience, and support Mauritania’s social and economic development.

Al Suwaidi added that cooperation between ADFD and Mauritania began in 1977 and has led to the funding of several important projects in infrastructure and essential services. He reaffirmed the Fund’s commitment to supporting development projects that benefit the Mauritanian people.

The project is being carried out in partnership with several Arab, Islamic, and international development funds, reflecting a joint effort to support Mauritania’s national goal of ensuring access to safe drinking water.
