Khulna: In a brazen daylight attack that has further intensified political instability, Motaleb Shikder, the Khulna divisional chief of the National Citizen Party (NCP) and a central organizer for Jatiya Shramik Shakti, in Bangladesh was shot in the head on Monday, December 22, 2025. The incident occurred around 11:45 AM in the Sonadanga area, specifically near the Gazi Medical College Hospital. According to eyewitnesses and party officials, Shikder was approached by unidentified gunmen, who targeted his head at close range. The bullet reportedly entered near one ear and exited through the other, narrowly missing vital brain centers. Shikder was a key figure in the 2024 student-led uprising and was currently organizing a major divisional labor rally in Khulna.

Shikder was initially rushed to Khulna Medical College Hospital (KMCH) in critical condition and bleeding profusely. After receiving emergency treatment in the surgery ward, he was transferred to a diagnostic center for a CT scan. Hospital Superintendent Mohammad Akhtaruzzaman later confirmed that while the wound was serious, the bullet had grazed his skull, and Shikder is now considered out of danger.

This shooting is the second high-profile attack on a revolutionary leader this month. It follows the death of Sharif Osman Hadi, a spokesperson for Inqilab Mancha, who died in Singapore on December 18 after being shot in Dhaka on December 12.

Security forces have been deployed at both the crime scene and the hospital to prevent further violence. This attack comes as Bangladesh prepares for general elections scheduled for early 2026, with the interim government under Muhammad Yunus facing increasing pressure to maintain law and order.
