India has the potential to become a key player in the global rare earth supply chain if it develops strong refining and processing capabilities, Adnan Amin, Chairman of the World Energy Council and former CEO of COP28, said. Speaking in an exclusive interaction with ANI, Amin noted that rare earth minerals are widely available across the world, including in India, but the challenge lies in building the industrial capacity needed to process them. “Rare earth minerals are not that rare. The real issue is how to refine and process them into usable elements for the energy transition,” he said.
Reflecting on China’s dominance in the sector, Amin said the country has spent the past 25 years investing in rare earth processing and establishing a strong industrial ecosystem. “Recent trade disruptions and geopolitical tensions have created a perception of monopoly, but countries like India can play a major role in diversifying supply chains,” he added.
Amin said several nations, including the United States and Japan, are now working to secure and diversify sources of rare earths. “India has the possibility, but again, it’s about developing the industrial capacity for processing and refining — that will be at the crux of this,” he said.
He also highlighted the growing importance of artificial intelligence (AI) in shaping the future of the energy industry. Comparing its impact to the mobile revolution, Amin said AI could transform energy planning and efficiency, particularly in developing nations. “AI offers a unique opportunity for countries like India to make their energy infrastructure more efficient and to bridge towards a cleaner, smarter future,” he said.
