Japan Records Deadliest Year for Bear Attacks in Nearly Two Decades

Japan has recorded seven fatal bear attacks so far this year, marking the highest number since national statistics on such incidents began in 2006.

The increase comes after a man was found dead last week in Iwate Prefecture, with authorities confirming that a bear was responsible. The previous fiscal year, 2023–24, saw five deaths caused by bear encounters.

Officials from the Environment Ministry warned residents in rural and mountainous areas to remain vigilant, particularly as bear activity tends to rise during certain seasons.
