Russia announced it had captured three villages in eastern Ukraine as its forces continue to advance slowly through heavily defended Ukrainian positions.
According to Russia’s Ministry of Defence, Russian troops have seized around 0.8 percent of Ukraine’s territory since the start of the year. The recent gains include the villages of Derylove and Maiske in the Donetsk region, and Stepove in the Dnipropetrovsk region. Russian officials described the fighting as intense, metre-by-metre skirmishes in largely destroyed areas with few residents or intact buildings remaining.
Meanwhile, Ukrainian authorities reported that an overnight Russian artillery barrage in the southeastern Kherson region killed one person and injured 12 others. The attacks also caused damage to railway lines in the neighboring Odesa region.
In another development, Russia stated that an oil pumping station in the Chuvashia Republic was forced to suspend operations following a Ukrainian drone strike deep behind the front lines. Kyiv has been targeting Russian energy infrastructure in recent months, framing the attacks as retaliation for Moscow’s bombardments and as an effort to disrupt revenue streams that support Russia’s military.
Diplomatic attempts to end the conflict, which is approaching its fourth year, have largely stalled. Recently, former US President Donald Trump suggested that Ukraine might be able to reclaim all territories lost to Russia, which has pledged to continue its offensive operations.
