Massive Sinkhole Disrupts Traffic and Services in Bangkok
Bangkok - A section of road in Bangkok collapsed on Wednesday, creating a massive sinkhole that disrupted traffic, damaged infrastructure, and forced evacuations in the surrounding area.
Bangkok Governor Chadchart Sittipunt confirmed that no casualties were reported, though three vehicles sustained damage in the incident. He noted that early investigations suggest the collapse was linked to ongoing construction work at a nearby underground train station.
Dramatic footage of the collapse showed the road gradually sinking, dragging down electricity poles and rupturing water pipes. Vehicles were seen reversing to escape the expanding hole, which eventually split the four-lane road in two. The sinkhole extended dangerously close to a police station, exposing underground structures and prompting immediate evacuations.
Authorities evacuated staff and residents from nearby buildings, while a hospital in the area announced the closure of its outpatient services for two days. City officials, however, confirmed the hospital’s main structure remained safe.
As a precaution, power and water supplies in the affected zone were cut. Governor Chadchart said repair crews were working urgently to stabilize the site, warning that heavy rainfall during the ongoing monsoon season could worsen the damage.
The incident has sparked fresh concerns over infrastructure safety in the capital, particularly in areas where underground construction projects are underway.
