The European Union on Tuesday defended its right to regulate tech companies operating within its borders, rejecting U.S. President Donald Trump’s claims that the bloc’s rules unfairly target American firms.
“It is the sovereign right of the EU and its member states to regulate economic activities on our territory in line with our democratic values,” said European Commission spokesperson Paula Pinho.
Thomas Regnier, the EU’s tech spokesperson, added, “Regarding President Trump’s statements that we are targeting U.S. companies, this is something we can firmly reject.”
The statements come amid ongoing tensions between the EU and the U.S. over tech regulations and digital market rules affecting global companies.
