Repeated exposure to heatwaves may speed up the aging process, according to a new study. Researchers say the effects of extreme heat on health could be as serious as smoking, drinking, poor diet, or lack of exercise.

The study, published in Nature Climate Change, followed nearly 25,000 adults in Taiwan over 15 years. Scientists looked at how heatwave exposure affected biological age—a measure of overall health that includes factors like blood pressure, cholesterol, inflammation, and organ function.

Results showed that just four extra heatwave days over two years could make a person’s biological age rise by around nine days. People who work outdoors were hit hardest: their biological age increased by 33 days during the same period.

While these numbers might seem small, experts warn that repeated exposure over decades could have a major impact on health, emphasizing the hidden risks of rising global temperatures.
