A routine attempt to order a litre of milk online turned into a nightmare for a 71-year-old woman in Mumbai, who lost her entire savings of ₹1.8 million (around $21,500) to an online scam.

Police said the woman, a resident of Wadala, received a call on August 4 from a man claiming to be “Deepak,” an employee of a dairy company. He sent her a link and instructed her to enter her personal and banking details, guiding her step by step for over an hour.

The next day, the fraudster called again, asking for more information. It was only during a routine visit to her bank that the woman discovered a massive withdrawal had been made from one of her accounts. Further investigation revealed that two additional accounts had also been emptied, leaving her with nothing.

Police explained that the scammer gained access to her financial data through the malicious link, which allowed him to remotely control her phone and access her banking apps.

The woman, who had spent a lifetime saving the stolen money, has filed a formal complaint. Authorities are currently investigating the case, but the suspect is still at large.
