A flash flood in Inner Mongolia has killed nine people and left three others missing, Chinese state media reported on Sunday.

The incident happened late Saturday when a group of 13 people were camping in Urat Rear Banner. According to Xinhua News Agency, the flood struck around 10 p.m. local time. One camper has been rescued.

More than 700 rescue workers are searching for the missing, and China’s Ministry of Emergency Management has sent a team to the area to support the efforts.

Flash floods and other natural disasters are common in China during the summer months. Earlier this month, at least 13 people were killed in floods and mudslides in the northwest. In July, Beijing recorded 44 deaths from heavy rainfall, while nearby Hebei province reported eight deaths from a landslide.

Experts warn that climate change is making extreme weather events more severe and increasing the risk of such disasters.
