Authorities in Hawaii have downgraded the tsunami warning to an advisory, allowing evacuated residents to return to their homes. The announcement was made by the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center (PTWC) following hours of elevated coastal threat after a massive 8.8-magnitude earthquake off Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula triggered widespread alerts across the Pacific.

The downgraded advisory means that while strong waves, minor flooding, and hazardous currents are still possible, the likelihood of a major tsunami striking the islands has passed.

Stephen Logan, Director of the Hawaii Emergency Management Agency, confirmed the update and urged residents to remain cautious. “People may return home,” Logan said, adding, “Drive slowly, stay alert, and watch for any signs of localised flooding.”

Earlier in the day, tsunami waves of up to 4 feet (1.2 meters) were recorded off the coast of Oahu, prompting emergency evacuations and shoreline closures across the state.

With wave activity subsiding and no significant damage reported so far, the advisory level status indicates the situation is stabilising. However, coastal communities are being advised to avoid entering the ocean due to the risk of lingering strong currents and sudden surges.

Emergency services remain on standby as officials continue to monitor sea conditions across the islands.
