Netanyahu: Hamas Gaza Chief Mohammad Sinwar Eliminated in Targeted Operation
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced on Wednesday that Mohammad Sinwar, a senior Hamas figure and younger brother of slain leader Yahya Sinwar, has been eliminated. The operation marks another significant blow to the militant group amid the ongoing conflict in Gaza.
Mohammad Sinwar rose through the ranks of Hamas following the death of his brother Yahya Sinwar, who was killed by Israeli forces earlier in the war. Yahya was widely held responsible for orchestrating the deadly October 2023 attack on Israel that sparked the current hostilities.
Following Yahya’s death, Mohammad assumed a top leadership position within Hamas, playing a key role in the group’s military operations in the Gaza Strip.
The elimination of Mohammad Sinwar comes after a series of high-profile assassinations by Israeli forces. Yahya Sinwar, after masterminding the October 2023 assault, had succeeded Ismail Haniyeh as the overall leader of Hamas, after Haniyeh was reportedly killed in an Israeli strike in Iran.
With the latest development, Israel continues its campaign to dismantle Hamas’ leadership structure. Netanyahu reaffirmed his government's commitment to pursuing all remaining Hamas figures, stating that "those responsible for the October massacre and continued violence will be held accountable."
The war in Gaza, now in its second year, has led to heavy casualties and widespread destruction. While Israel maintains that its operations target militants and infrastructure, international pressure continues to mount over the humanitarian situation in the region.
