At least 17 people lost their lives after a massive fire tore through a commercial building in Hyderabad early Sunday morning, according to local authorities in Telangana state.

The fire, which erupted around 6:00 am local time (00:30 GMT), began on the ground floor of a three-storey building housing a jewellery store and quickly spread to the upper levels. Emergency services from the Fire Disaster Response and Civil Defence Department rushed to the scene, launching simultaneous firefighting and rescue operations.

Officials confirmed that 17 individuals perished in the incident, and their names were released in an official statement. Authorities have not yet determined the exact cause of the fire, but investigations are underway.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed deep sorrow over the tragic incident and extended condolences to the victims’ families. “Deeply anguished by the loss of lives due to a fire tragedy in Hyderabad, Telangana. Condolences to those who have lost their loved ones. May the injured recover soon,” he said in a statement issued by his office. The Prime Minister also announced financial compensation of 200,000 rupees (approximately $2,300) for the next of kin of each deceased individual.

Fires of this magnitude are sadly not uncommon in India, where lax enforcement of safety regulations, overcrowded buildings, and substandard construction practices often contribute to such disasters. Just last month, a deadly hotel fire in Kolkata claimed at least 15 lives, while a similar blaze in a Gujarat amusement park killed 24 people in 2024.

As Hyderabad mourns, emergency responders continue their work at the scene, and questions are being raised about safety compliance in commercial establishments across the city.
