Ukraine Endorses U.S.-Proposed 30-Day Ceasefire as Moscow’s Response Remains Uncertain
The United States has announced the immediate resumption of military and intelligence support for Ukraine following Kyiv’s endorsement of a U.S.-proposed ceasefire agreement, according to a joint statement issued by both nations.
"Ukraine expressed readiness to accept the U.S. proposal to enact an immediate, interim 30-day ceasefire, which can be extended by mutual agreement of the parties, and which is subject to acceptance and concurrent implementation by the Russian Federation," the statement read. "The United States will communicate to Russia that Russian reciprocity is the key to achieving peace."
It remains unclear whether Moscow will accept the proposal.
The agreement follows an extensive eight-hour meeting between senior U.S. and Ukrainian officials in Saudi Arabia. Speaking to reporters after the meeting, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated, "We’ll take this offer now to the Russians. We hope the Russians will reciprocate."
The joint statement represents a notable improvement in U.S.-Ukraine relations after tensions between the two countries’ presidents and the abrupt suspension of U.S. military assistance to Kyiv.
During the discussions, Ukrainian officials supported a limited ceasefire proposal restricting both Kyiv and Moscow from launching aerial and sea-based long-range attacks, while fighting along the front line would persist.
Ukraine’s President, Volodymyr Zelensky, had previously suggested such a ceasefire on social media last week in an effort to show his commitment to a peace agreement.
