Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas traveled to Jordan on Wednesday for urgent discussions with King Abdullah II, following a controversial proposal by former U.S. President Donald Trump regarding the Gaza Strip.
A high-ranking source within the Palestinian president’s office confirmed to AFP that Abbas departed for Amman on Wednesday morning. The meeting comes in response to Trump’s unexpected suggestion that the United States should "take over" and "own" Gaza, while its Palestinian residents would be relocated to Egypt or Jordan.
The proposal has sparked widespread concern, as it raises questions about the future of Gaza’s governance, Palestinian sovereignty, and the broader geopolitical implications for the region. Abbas and King Abdullah II are expected to deliberate on the potential ramifications of Trump’s plan and coordinate a response.
The Palestinian leadership has consistently opposed any attempts to alter the status of Gaza without direct involvement from its people. Jordan, which has long played a key role in Middle East peace efforts, has also been vocal about maintaining Palestinian rights and sovereignty.
The meeting in Amman underscores the urgency with which regional leaders are addressing this latest development. Further statements from both Palestinian and Jordanian officials are anticipated following the discussions.
