Kia Donates Trucks to Boost River Cleanup Efforts in Guatemala

Kia has donated two trucks to its global partner, The Ocean Cleanup, to accelerate efforts to remove plastic pollution from rivers in Guatemala.

The initiative marks the latest phase of the long-term partnership between the two organizations, which focuses on intercepting plastic waste in rivers before it reaches the ocean, as well as removing existing marine pollution.

Guatemala has emerged as a critical location in the fight against plastic pollution due to the environmental impact of waste carried by the Motagua River and Las Vacas River. These rivers are among the largest contributors of plastic waste flowing into the Caribbean Sea, with an estimated 20,000 tons of trash passing through them each year. The pollution has had severe consequences for marine ecosystems and coastal communities in Guatemala and neighboring countries.

To tackle the issue, The Ocean Cleanup has deployed advanced floating systems known as “Interceptors” in key locations. Interceptor 006 operates in the Las Vacas River, while Interceptor 021 is positioned in the lower Motagua basin. These systems use barriers to collect waste from river currents and channel it to extraction points, where it is removed and processed.

Kia’s donation of two K2700 trucks is expected to significantly enhance these operations by improving the transportation of collected waste. The trucks will help speed up removal from collection sites, ensure efficient delivery to sorting and management facilities, and reduce logistical bottlenecks, allowing for smoother and continuous cleanup efforts.

The collaboration aims to deliver long-term environmental benefits by protecting marine and freshwater ecosystems, reducing waste entering the Caribbean Sea, and minimizing the social and economic impact of pollution on local communities.

Kia stated that its continued support reflects a commitment to sustainable solutions and meaningful local impact through global partnerships.
