Masdar Signs First Solar Power Deal in Angola with 150MW Quipungo Project

Abu Dhabi-based clean energy leader Masdar has signed its first Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) in Angola for the 150-megawatt Quipungo Solar Photovoltaic project. The project is part of Project Royal Sable, a larger 500MW renewable energy program that will strengthen Angola’s southern power grid and support the country’s sustainable energy goals.

The agreement was signed with Angola’s state-owned electricity company, Rede Nacional de Transporte de Electricidade (RNT-EP). Masdar’s Chief Operating Officer, Abdulaziz Alobadli, and RNT-EP’s Executive Director for Market Operations and Regulatory Affairs, Mauro Hernany Ferrerira Martins, represented their respective organizations. The signing took place during the IRENA General Assembly as part of Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week and was attended by senior officials from the UAE and Angola, as well as leaders from IRENA.

The PPA ensures long-term electricity supply from the Quipungo Solar PV site in Huila Province, southern Angola. As the first commercial project under Project Royal Sable, it will lay the groundwork for the full 500MW program, which is expected to:

  • Create more than 2,000 jobs

  • Provide clean electricity to around 300,000 homes

  • Strengthen the southern power grid

Masdar’s CEO, Mohamed Jameel Al Ramahi, said the project demonstrates the company’s commitment to affordable, reliable clean energy in Africa and its role in supporting national energy strategies, economic growth, and local communities.

IRENA Director-General Francesco LaCamera highlighted that the Quipungo project reflects the UAE and Masdar’s efforts to turn national energy plans into real projects. He added that it will expand access to clean electricity and inspire investor confidence in Africa’s energy transition.

Masdar is already the largest renewable energy operator in Africa through its joint venture Infinity Power, with 1.3GW of solar and wind projects in South Africa, Egypt, and Senegal, and a pipeline of 13.8GW, including battery storage and green hydrogen projects. Project Royal Sable will help Masdar reach its goal of 100GW portfolio capacity by 2030.
