Sharjah Film Festival Shines Spotlight on Korean Culture
The 12th edition of the Sharjah International Film Festival for Children and Youth (SIFF) celebrated South Korea as its Guest of Honour, offering audiences an immersive journey into the heart of Korean cinema. Renowned for its emotionally resonant stories and visually striking productions, Korean cinema took center stage with a series of screenings, workshops, and discussions that bridged cultures and inspired creativity.
The festival’s “Green Carpet” featured the Korean film 2:15 PM, directed by Seryeong Jung. The touching story follows a ten-year-old girl who befriends another child isolated from the world, discovering the warmth of human connection and the power of breaking barriers.
In addition, a panel titled “A Journey Through Korean Cinema: From Korea to the World” explored the global rise of Korean films and their impact on young audiences. Hosted at VOX Cinemas, City Centre Al Zahia, the discussion included Korean students who shared their experiences creating original films, reflecting the imagination and innovation that define contemporary Korean storytelling.
Ralm Lee, Director of the Busan International Film Festival, highlighted that Korean cinema’s international success is the result of years of creative experimentation. “K-pop and Korean dramas like Squid Game became global phenomena because of persistent creativity and cultural resonance,” she noted. “My visit to Sharjah showed how much Korea and the UAE share in values and a forward-looking vision.”
Filmmaker Shin Seo-yeon, whose journey began with high school short films, expressed her excitement at presenting her work in Sharjah. “Cultural differences between Korea and the UAE highlight each nation’s unique identity,” she said. “During the pandemic, audiences worldwide discovered Korean cinema online, and today technology and AI continue to connect us through shared creativity.”
Alaa Al Awadi, a member of SHOGO – the Korean Club in the UAE – emphasized the importance of cultural exchange. “Our mission is to build bridges between Korea and the UAE through cinema, music, and art. Collaborating with SIFF allows more Korean stories to reach local audiences,” he said, adding that the club’s growing influence reflects the global fascination with Korean culture, from K-pop to cuisine.
Beyond films and discussions, the Sharjah Research, Technology and Innovation Park hosted interactive workshops exploring Korean culture in depth. Visitors experienced Korean culinary arts, music, fashion, and beauty trends, engaging directly with the vibrant spirit of the Hallyu wave and the values that define Korea’s creative identity.
SIFF’s celebration of Korean culture offered a unique platform for cross-cultural dialogue, reminding audiences that cinema and creativity can transcend borders and connect hearts worldwide.
