On the penultimate day of the third Asian Youth Games, Bahrain’s Jhon Lopez produced a sensational display to clinch double gold in the Boys’ 94kg category in weightlifting.

The 17-year-old lifter impressed the home crowd with a best lift of 160kg in the snatch and 186kg in the clean and jerk, setting two new Asian Youth Records and OCA Youth Games best marks in the process.

Lopez was in top form throughout, showing composure and strength in each round. In the snatch, he cleared 150kg and 156kg before hoisting 160kg on his final attempt — rewriting the continental youth record in front of home supporters.

He then carried that momentum into the clean and jerk, succeeding at 180kg and 181kg, before locking out 186kg to complete a golden sweep in the session.

Turkmenistan’s Yslam Akmyradov claimed silver with 146kg in snatch and 185kg in clean and jerk, while Uzbekistan’s Abbosbek Akhrolov took bronze in snatch with 147kg and finished fifth overall in the clean and jerk at 170kg.

Iran’s Amin Adibi Sedeh finished fourth in both lifts, while Chinese Taipei’s Jun-Wei Ma placed fifth in snatch and sixth in clean and jerk.
