Arsenal Sign Striker Viktor Gyökeres from Sporting

Arsenal have bolstered their attacking line with the signing of Swedish striker Viktor Gyökeres from Portuguese side Sporting CP, the Premier League club announced on Saturday.

The 27-year-old forward joins on a five-year deal, with British media reporting a transfer fee of £55 million ($73.89 million) upfront, plus £8 million in performance-based add-ons. Gyökeres becomes Arsenal’s fifth signing of the summer as manager Mikel Arteta looks to build a title-winning squad.

“We're absolutely delighted to welcome Viktor Gyökeres to the club,” Arteta said. “The consistency he has shown in his performances and availability have been outstanding, and his goal contributions speak for themselves.”

Gyökeres arrives after two prolific seasons at Sporting, where he scored 97 goals and provided 28 assists in 102 appearances. He finished last season with an astonishing 54 goals in 52 matches, playing a vital role in Sporting’s domestic double and delivering a standout Champions League hat-trick against Manchester City.

The signing addresses a key need for Arsenal, who lacked a reliable central striker last season and finished 10 points behind champions Liverpool. Injuries to Gabriel Jesus and Kai Havertz forced Arteta to improvise late in the campaign, even deploying midfielder Mikel Merino as a false nine.

Gyökeres, who previously played for Coventry City and had a stint at Brighton, will wear the number 14 shirt and join Arsenal’s pre-season tour in Asia. His arrival follows the acquisitions of Noni Madueke, Kepa Arrizabalaga, Christian Nørgaard, and Martin Zubimendi, as the Gunners aim to end their 21-year Premier League title drought.
