The Bahrain Chamber of Commerce and Industry, in cooperation with the Family Business Council Gulf, organized the “Family Business Governance Lab,” with the participation of representatives from family businesses in Bahrain and Saudi Arabia. The initiative aims to enhance the sustainability of family businesses and support successful leadership transition across generations.

The Lab provided an interactive platform for family business owners, board members, and next-generation leaders to strengthen governance practices, improve intergenerational communication, and establish clear frameworks for ownership, leadership, and decision-making. The program included a presentation on Bahrain’s Family Business Governance Guide, along with interactive sessions and practical simulations led by specialized governance and succession-planning consultants.

His Excellency Mr. Sameer Abdullah Nass, Chairman of the Bahrain Chamber, emphasized that family businesses are a cornerstone of the national economy and that adopting institutional governance is essential to ensure continuity, improve decision-making, and protect family legacy. He highlighted the importance of empowering the next generation and preparing them to meet evolving economic challenges.

He added that the Bahrain Chamber places strong emphasis on family businesses and, through various initiatives and partnerships, supports the sector by strengthening governance, building capabilities, and promoting best practices, reinforcing Bahrain’s position as a sustainable model for family enterprises.

His Excellency Mr. Khalid Mohammed Najibi, First Vice Chairman of the Chamber, noted that establishing family councils helps align family interests with business objectives, strengthens internal cohesion, and supports long-term sustainability. He reaffirmed the Chamber’s continued support for governance initiatives that promote a national model for sustainable family businesses. His Excellency Mr. Nawaf Khalid Al Zayani, Vice Chairman of Al Zayani Investments and a Board Member of the Bahrain Chamber and the Family Business Council Gulf, stressed that early succession planning and intergenerational consensus are critical to business continuity. He highlighted that the Lab translates governance concepts into practical tools that help families manage leadership transitions and safeguard long-term stability. Ms. Hind Suhail Bahwan, Chairman of the Family Business Council Gulf, stated that: “Family businesses are only as strong as the families behind them. Governance is a fundamental pillar, no less important than business strategy, as it helps protect relationships, foster harmony, and ensure business sustainability across generations. Through this initiative, the Kingdom of Bahrain is reinforcing a clear regional model for sound family governance.”

The “Family Governance Lab” is the first in a series of interactive workshops aimed at transforming knowledge into practical application and building a strong community of family business leaders committed to institutional governance in Bahrain and the Gulf region.
