Leading carmaker Toyota unveiled its innovative “Woven City” on Thursday, a high-tech residential community designed to serve as a living laboratory for autonomous driving, robotics, and other futuristic technologies.
Built on the site of a former Toyota factory at the base of Mount Fuji, the project will initially house around 360 Toyota employees and affiliates in smart homes, with plans to eventually accommodate up to 2,000 residents.
“This is a test course for the future, not just a town,” Toyota Chairman Akio Toyoda said during the opening ceremony, according to NHK. He described Woven City as a “living laboratory” where residents participate willingly, allowing inventors to trial new technologies in a secure and realistic environment.
The city will explore a wide range of innovations, including flying taxis, robot pets, and drones that can escort residents home at night. Homes are equipped to test in-home robotics designed to assist with everyday tasks—such as robots capable of learning how to fold clothes.
First announced in 2020, the project is being led by Toyoda’s son, Daisuke Toyoda. “Much like test drivers for cars, our residents will be the ones who use and experience the new products and services our inventors develop,” Toyoda said.
Woven City represents Toyota’s ambitious vision for integrating technology into daily life while providing a controlled environment to refine ideas before broader implementation.
