MPs to discuss recruiting citizens with disabilities

As many as 129 disabled Bahrainis remain jobless, while 73 are employed, the latest official statistics revealed.

This was stated by the Minister of Labour and Social Development Jameel Humaidan in his reply to parliamentary queries concerning recruiting Bahrainis with disabilities.

The Minister explained that “there are 40 unemployed citizens with disabilities registered with the Ministry’s programmes, holding higher studies degrees.”

His statements came in reply to queries sent by members of Parliament’s Services Committee, while they studied a law proposal that obliges Ministries, governmental authorities and companies that are half-owned by the government to allocate two per cent of their workforce for citizens with disabilities.

The committee approved the proposal and the remaining MPs will vote on it during their weekly regular meeting this Tuesday. The committee said “the law proposal comes to empower citizens with disabilities and recruit them in both the public and private sectors of the local labour market.

The committee will discuss with the other MPs on Tuesday the feedback from Labour and Social Development Ministry, Civil Service Bureau and Bahrain Mumtalakat Holding Company, as one of the major establishments in the country that the Government has majority of shares in.
