Bahrain cuts occupational accidents by over 50% in 6 years: Labour Minister

Bahrain has successfully reduced the number of occupational accidents by more than 50% during the period from 2016-2022, said Labour Minister Jameel Humaidan.

Humaidan, who is also the Chairman of the Occupational Safety and Health Council, said the Kingdom has also achieved a 47% reduction in the percentage of occupational accidents in the construction sector during 2017- 2022 period.

Marking the World Day for Safety and Health at Work, celebrated globally on April 28, the minister said it is necessary for workers to show commitment to wearing personal protective equipment to prevent unfortunate accidents.

The minister also called for strengthening the role of health supervisors on work sites, employing appropriate machines and technologies to prevent unfortunate accidents.

The international day aims to promote health and safety awareness in the work environment by preventing diseases and injuries, and spreading the importance of occupational safety and health management to enhance productivity and safety in the workplace.

In this regard, the minister called on employers to take the day as another starting point to enhance the protection of workers and develop protection and safety systems, in addition to preparing and qualifying more national cadres in occupational safety and health.

Work Space project

In a statement, the Health Ministry highlighted the significance of the Healthy Work Space project to enhance workers’ health and safety, as well as the social and psychological work environment.

The project aims to increase health awareness in both public and private sectors, promoting healthy lifestyles, better diets and physical activity, quitting smoking, and prioritizing mental health in the workplace. The ministry called for collaboration with local authorities and companies to ensure a healthy work environment.
