Shops gutted in Manama souq

Manama

fire broke out in a garment shop in Manama souq yesterday causing damages of nearly BD20,000. The fire was reportedly caused due to short circuit.

Seven shops in the Manama Traditional Market were ablaze after the fire broke out at around 9am.

“It happened shortly after a worker opened the shop and switched on the a/c. It caused a spark and the fire quickly spread. Luckily, nobody was hurt,” the source said.

Manama Traditional Market Committee Deputy Chairman Mahmood Al Namliti confirmed inventory from seven shops were destroyed.

“The fire brigade arrived quickly and extinguished the fire. If they had not arrived on time, damages would have been much higher,” he said.

“The fire brigade left at around 11am, but after half an hour, I had to call them again as the fire broke out again. They returned immediately and controlled the blaze,” Al Namliti added.

He urged the authorities to take initiative in increasing safety measures against fire and educating the workers on how to deal with such incidents. “Fire safety classes should be offered to the workers in the souq in the language they understand,” he said.
