Monfaradi clinches first gold, Sheheeb wins bronze

ManamaAli Monfaradi won Bahrain’s first gold medal and Ahmed Sheheeb picked up a bronze yesterday in the Jiu Jitsu Ne-Waza competition at the Martial Arts Arena on the second day of the Fifth Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games in Ashgabat, Turkmenistan.

Competing in the 77kg and under category, the 23-year old Monfaradi, the son of team coach Reza Monfaradi, defeated Jordanian Hamzah Al Rasheed 2-0 on points in a closely fought final bout on points after the completion of six minutes of action.

He began his advance to the final with a 99-0 submission victory against Murtazah Murtazaliev of Kyrgyzstan in the Round of 16 after four minutes 35 seconds, then in the quarter finals defeated Kazakhstan’s Nurlon Yespolov also by submission (4:23) and booked his place in the final with a semi-final submission (5:22) over Iran’s Davar Nansoori also by submission.

In the same weight category, Sheheeb began with a Round of 16 bout, 6-0 victory on points against Zakir Abbas from Pakistan, then in the quarter finals beat Albert Aldiyarov of Kazakhstan 0-0 via a referee decision and in the semi-finals, lost out to Jordan’s Hamzah Al Rasheed 5-0 on points.

Sheheeb then went on to beat Kazakhstan’s Nurlan Yespolov 5-0 on points.

Three more Bahrainis were in action in other weight sections, but saw their medal dreams dashed after failing to reach the advanced stages of their respective contests.

Najid Al Gosaibi came close towards securing a podium for Bahrain in the under-85 category, but in the repechage final bout against Kazakhstan’s Kuandyk Yesseneyev it ended with disqualification by Funsen-Gachi, (A default win through non-appearance of an opponent).

Earlier, Al Gosaibi by Rasuljon Muhammedov of Tajikistan by submission (2:35), and lost to Bader Al Kuzai of Jordan by submission (5:55).

In the same category, Ali Ibrahimi began with a submission (3:25) victory over Harout Karaoghlanian from Lebanon in the Round of 16, then lost his quarter final bout  to Turkmenistan’s Mergen Jorayew 18-0 on points.

Bahrain’s other participant, Mohammed Abudrees bowed out to Banpot Lertthaisong of Thailand 16-0 on points in his under-69kg opening bout.

The Bahrain Royal Equestrian and Endurance Federation president and Bahrain chef de mission Shaikh Faisal bin Rashid Al Khalifa congratulated the Jiu Jitsu team on the winning of medals victory and wished them further progress in their next challenges.

Meanwhile, the three-member taekwondo team will face their maiden challenge today in three different weight categories.

Jumana Mohammed will take on Thai opponent Kanjana Sukeewas in her under-75kg Round of 16 round fight, Juwana will be in action tomorrow when she takes on Nguyen Ha of Vietnam in another last-16 round fight in the under-62kg weight group.
